Biakai Meye, BSN, RN-BC, is a first-year Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) student at Chamberlain University College of Nursing in Addison, Illinois. She hails from an African cultural community where mental illness is severely stigmatized. It is for this reason that she is fostering her studies to use the knowledge gained to educate her community about mental health and drug abuse services and become an advocate for this vulnerable population in their treatment program. Ultimately, Ms. Meye’s goal is to improve her culturally competent skills to provide accessible and affordable mental health care to underprivileged communities.
She began her nursing career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN), a Licensed Practicing Nurse (LPN), and a Registered Nurse with an Associate degree (AD) in nursing. In 2016, she earned her BSN from Thomas Edison State University and was awarded The Arnold Fletcher Award in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement. She also holds a bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences. In 2014, Ms. Meye began specializing in psychiatric and mental health nursing after serving as a staff nurse in a nursing home and rehabilitation unit. From 2014-2021 she served as a preceptor, charge nurse, and resource nurse in an adult acute psychiatric care unit. She later assumed a full-time position as an evening house supervisor at the same 281-bed acute psychiatric hospital and a 40-bed inpatient detox and recovery facility in Belle Mead, New Jersey. With nearly eight years of experience as a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse, Ms. Meye is passionate about helping the underprivileged. She volunteers at soup kitchens and has shopped groceries for homebound seniors in Somerset County, New Jersey.
She is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA).
